My approach to supervision
For most senior mental health staff, including Allied Health, I use a person-first approach to ensure and uphold the integrity of the workforce so that it can perform optimally. This involves the principles of establishing the elements of any aspects of challenges faced by the clinician that may be affecting their own mental health and wellbeing. The body of the sessions adopts a normative-formative-restorative-transformative approach dependent on the issue and individual need. Focussed discussions of de-identified clinical presentations or impediments in clinical settings are addressed. Formal agreements are developed and co-signed and the relevant legislative and professional, medicolegal and ethical context are taken into account
Metaphor, allegory and parallel process evaluation occurs throughout supervision as adjunctive factors, as well as psychodynamic influences impacting practice and care
