My approach to supervision
I approach supervision as a collaborative and supportive process, aimed at enhancing both professional practice and personal wellbeing. I believe the goal of supervision is to create a safe and respectful space where supervisees feel empowered to explore their clinical work, reflect on their experiences, develop their skills and consider what they need to maintain boundaries between their work and their personal life.
I believe a safe relationship with supervisees is based on open communication and mutual respect. Allowing us to engage in reflective discussions that consider the complexities of resourcing, service demands, caseloads, ethical dilemmas, as well as personal reactions to client and peer interactions.
I am a strong advocate for career long learning and professional growth, but also know we can be quicker to seek feedback on our perceived failures rather than celebrating our successes. So I see the value of a strengths-based approach to supervision, reflecting positive regard to clinicians, modelling and reinforcing ways they can then continue to bring that to the room for their clients.
