Joanne Weir

About me

This supervisor has been approved to provide supervision under the ACCESS TO SUPERVISION PROJECT.

I bring a rich and multifaceted lived experience to my work, shaped by my role as a young carer for my mother who experienced mental illness and AOD challenges, and as a parent supporting my child through ongoing mental health challenges. I have personally navigated the mental health system while facing stigma, misunderstanding, and the difficulty of accessing appropriate services for both myself and my loved ones. My journey includes lived experience with suicidality and the profound loss of my brother to suicide, which has deepened my understanding of the complexities and emotional weight carried by families and carers. These experiences have instilled in me a strong commitment to advocacy, empathy, and systemic change, and continue to inform my practice and perspective in every professional setting I engage with.

This supervisor has been approved to provide supervision under the ACCESS TO SUPERVISION PROJECT. If you are a supervisee who has received an approval email/letter from the CMHL you may contact this supervisor for supervision for this project, then follow the stated processes for supervision payment.

My experience

I am a dedicated lived experience practitioner with over eight years of professional experience in the mental health sector, underpinned by a lifetime of personal and family/carer lived experience. I have worked in both consumer and family/carer lived experience roles, including six years with Peninsula Health’s Crisis and Assessment Team and the HOPE Suicide Prevention Team. I’ve held leadership roles supporting peer workers and consulting systemically to embed lived experience perspectives in service design. Currently, I work with Better Health Network’s Mental Health Integrated Complex Care program and the Upstart program, providing 1:1 peer support, group facilitation, and systemic advocacy. I have contributed to statewide initiatives such as CMHL training development, co-design with TACSI, and collaborative projects across Victorian services. My academic background includes a Bachelor of Counselling and near completion of a Master of Social Work, complemented by extensive training in peer support, supervision, and family therapy. My practice is guided by values of empowerment, inclusion, and human rights, and I am committed to fostering growth, sustainability, and recognition of the lived experience workforce.

My current role/work

Current Role – Better Health Network

In my current role with Better Health Network’s Mental Health Integrated Complex Care (MHICC) program, I provide 1:1 peer support to individuals navigating complex mental health challenges. My work is grounded in lived experience, offering empathetic, recovery-oriented support that fosters trust, connection, and empowerment. I also contribute to system-wide advocacy, ensuring the consumer lived experience voice is embedded in service design and delivery. This includes consulting with my team and across the service to promote inclusive, person-centred practices.

Additionally, I work with the Upstart program, where I support individuals through group development and co-facilitation. This involves helping people build community connections and engage in meaningful activities such as study, volunteering, or employment. My role bridges direct peer support and systemic influence, advocating for recovery-focused approaches and contributing to a culture that values lived experience as a form of professional expertise.

My training

Professionally, I have worked in lived experience roles for over eight years, including six years with Peninsula Health’s Crisis and Assessment Team and the HOPE Suicide Prevention Team, where I supported families and carers through acute mental health crises. I’ve held leadership roles that involved mentoring peer workers and contributing to systemic change through consultation and co-design. Currently, I work with Better Health Network’s Mental Health Integrated Complex Care program and the Upstart program, providing 1:1 peer support and group facilitation. My academic background in counselling and social work, combined with training from Bouverie and CMHL, reflects my commitment to integrating lived experience with therapeutic and systemic practice. I value the principles of empowerment, human rights, and collaboration, and I strive to elevate the voices of consumers and carers within multidisciplinary teams, fostering environments where lived expertise is respected and embedded in service design and delivery.

My approach to supervision

My approach to lived experience supervision is grounded in mutual respect, reflective practice, and the principles of empowerment and human rights. I view supervision as a collaborative space where lived experience workers can explore their practice, navigate challenges, and celebrate growth in a way that honours their unique perspectives. I bring a trauma-informed, relational lens to supervision, recognising the emotional labour and vulnerability inherent in lived experience roles. I aim to create a safe, non-hierarchical environment where supervisees feel heard, validated, and supported to develop their professional identity.

Drawing from my background in counselling, social work, and peer support, I integrate theoretical knowledge with experiential wisdom. I support supervisees to reflect on their values, boundaries, and role clarity, while also navigating systemic dynamics such as power imbalances and stigma. I believe supervision should foster resilience, critical thinking, and leadership, and I am committed to promoting the sustainability and wellbeing of the lived experience workforce. My practice is informed by models such as Intentional Peer Support, Foundations of Peer Support, Single Session Peer Consultation, Family Therapy Foundations and Lived Experience Frameworks. and I tailor supervision to meet the evolving needs of each individual and their context.
