Amanda Habermann

About me

This supervisor has been approved to provide supervision under the ACCESS TO SUPERVISION PROJECT.

Amanda is a white, middle-class, middle-aged woman who recognises the privilege and advantages that come with her social position, and she approaches her work with ongoing awareness of this context. English is her first language. She now lives rurally in Southwest Queensland on Githabul Land, with her husband and a lively collection of very loved animals, including her cat Marcus, dogs Toby and Coco, budgies George and Mildred, and a flock of chickens.

Born in Geelong, Victoria, Amanda maintains strong family connections there, and she previously spent 30 years living in Perth, Western Australia, where she also has family and long standing friendships. She has a deep love of music, and she plays guitar and drums, writes songs, and enjoys listening to a wide range of genres.

Amanda is known for being a thoughtful listener and a deeply reflective thinker, and she brings a commitment to ongoing learning and growth to both her personal life and professional practice.

This supervisor has been approved to provide supervision under the ACCESS TO SUPERVISION PROJECT. If you are a supervisee who has received an approval email/letter from the CMHL you may contact this supervisor for supervision for this project, then follow the stated processes for supervision payment.

My experience

Amanda’s work is deeply informed by her own lived experience. She has not always been where she is today, and she carries a strong awareness of where she has come from. Her life has included experiences of trauma, homelessness, domestic violence, parental alienation, poverty, and a decade of involvement in the mental health system as a consumer where for years her autonomy was limited and her voice often unheard.

She is proud of her journey toward reclaiming her life. Amanda has achieved her goals of exiting the mental health system as a consumer, tapering off psychiatric medications, and developing mastery over her voice-hearing and psychosis-related experiences. She lives a self-directed life not because she set out to prove others wrong, but because she always knew she had the strength and capacity within her.

Motivated by these experiences, Amanda has returned to the mental health system as a Lived Experience worker, advocate, educator, academic, consultant, and consumer representative. Her purpose is to contribute to change and improvement, working to ensure mental health services are safer, more humane, and grounded in genuine connection. She is committed to elevating lived experience voices, challenging systems that cause harm, and supporting others to rise together.

Amanda is an active participant in the Consumer/Survivor/Ex-Patient Movement in Australia and has been fortunate to work across both government and non-government organisations in a range of Lived Experience roles.

My current role/work

Amanda has been self-employed for the past ten years as a Lived Experience trainer, consultant, and supervisor. She is deeply passionate about education and has delivered training as a trainer and assessor for the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work. Her training experience also includes the Hearing Voices Approach, Emotional CPR, and a range of Lived Experience education programs.

Alongside her consultancy work, Amanda is a casual Peer Mentor with Roses in the Ocean and serves as an in-shift supervisor for their National Warmline. She has been providing Lived Experience Supervision for the past five years, supporting workers to grow in confidence, strengthen their practice, and remain connected to their values.

My approach to supervision

Amanda’s approach to supervision is grounded in meeting people where they are and establishing a safe, authentic, and trusting working relationship. She believes that effective supervision is led by the supervisee, with Amanda joining the process as an engaged co-pilot who supports their direction and development.

She encourages reflective practice to help individuals recognise their strengths, explore areas for growth, and build confidence in their professional skills. Amanda values honesty, openness, and healthy conversations, and she brings flexibility and strong listening skills to every supervisory relationship. She views constructive feedback, both giving and receiving, as an essential component of learning and ongoing professional development.
