About me

This supervisor has been approved to provide supervision under the ACCESS TO SUPERVISION PROJECT.

Hi! My name is Alec. I am a Consumer Lived Experience professional with over five years’ experience working across a variety of lived experience roles. I’m originally from Mildura in country Victoria and moved to Melbourne about 15 years ago. I now live in the inner northern suburbs with my cat.

I’m passionate about working in the lived experience space and am strongly committed to the values of the Consumer movement. My experience spans peer work, systemic roles (as a Consumer Consultant and Lived Experience Project Officer), and lived experience research.

This supervisor has been approved to provide supervision under the ACCESS TO SUPERVISION PROJECT. If you are a supervisee who has received an approval email/letter from the CMHL you may contact this supervisor for supervision for this project, then follow the stated processes for supervision payment.

My experience

My journey in the lived experience workforce began as a Peer Worker at the Alfred’s PARC, before moving into a Consumer Consultant role within the Alfred’s Quality and Service Improvement Team. I later joined the Strategy and Planning Team, also as a Consumer Consultant, contributing to the implementation of the Royal Commission recommendations and the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 (VIC). I also worked as a Lived Experience Project Officer where I worked on specialist Lived Experience based projects.

In 2024, I worked as a Lived Experience Research Assistant with Wellways, where I contributed to the development of the Lived and Living Experience Common Ground Toolkit and report for the Victorian Collaborative Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing. I am currently employed as a Consumer Consultant with Western Health.

My current role/work

I currently work at Western Health in a Consumer Consultant Role where I:

  • Co-ordinate and Facilitate the Consumer and Carer Advisory Group
  • Work on and develop projects to embed Lived Experience in Governance
  • Partner with Consumers to design and facilitate co-design workshops
  • Advocate on behalf of consumers in areas like Quality and Service Improvement and Service Design and Delivery
  • Sit on external systemic-based committees

My training

Cert IV of Mental Health - Melbourne Polytechnic

Consumers Leading in Governance Training - VMIAC

Project Management Fundamentals Training – Learn4Results

My approach to supervision

I view supervision as a co-reflection space guided by the needs and goals of the supervisee. I aim to create space for reflection and exploration, where supervisees feel comfortable to ask tricky, curious, and supportive questions. I strive to structure supervision so that it is led by the supervisee, fostering connection and mutuality. My approach is grounded in empowerment, encouraging individuals to develop their own insights and answers. I’m also open to gently challenging supervisees when it feels helpful for their growth and reflection.
