An increase in referrals in relation to Adolescent Violence in the Home (AVITH) has been noted across the service sector. Practitioners often struggle to respond to families where the parent/carer feels powerless and the young person is struggling with numerous challenges.
This two-day workshop provides participants with:
-
an understanding of the issue (AVITH), its determinants and the rationale for a family systems response
-
a family-based response which fosters change in the young person and parent/carer placing particular emphasis on enhancing the parent/child connection
-
an overview of current Australian research on AVITH, detailed practice principles and opportunities to learn and practice key skills.
-
theoretical frameworks that inform their practice including family systems, attachment theory, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed practice, dyadic developmental psychotherapy (DDP) and narrative therapy.
Who should attend
AVITH is relevant across a broad range of settings for practitioners seeking to build their confidence in working with young people who use violence and their parent/s or carers.
This may include family and youth services, youth mental health, alcohol and drug, private practitioners, disability services, child protection and youth justice.
