Designing and delivering adult education in healthcare involves a structured, thoughtful process to ensure that learning is impactful, relevant, and engaging.

Key considerations include:

  • Learning Needs and Objectives – assess the specific learning needs of the target audience and develop clear, measurable learning objectives that guide focus and outcomes.

  • Content development - select content that is relevant, evidence-based, contemporary and in line with learning objectives. Incorporate case studies, recent research, and practical examples supports learners integrate new information to their clinical context.

  • Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) - design activities which are linked to learning outcomes and give learners opportunities to construct knowledge, explore application of content and/or develop skills through active participation. This can include activities such as simulations, role-playing, group discussions, or self-reflection exercises.

  • Opportunities for Peer Learning - Peer learning and collaboration are invaluable in healthcare education. Consider group activities and encourage discussions that allow learners to share experiences and learn from each other.

  • Delivery Methods – cater to different learning styles. For example, using a mix of lectures, videos, readings, and interactive online tools. Consider offering online modules or hybrid options. Incorporate self-directed learning, such as reading lists, optional assignments, or additional case studies, so learners can explore topics on their own
