About this project

We engaged a family carer lived experience-led research team from the Family and Carer Research Advocacy Network (FaCRAN) at RMIT University to understand the state and nature of family carer research.

This project included a scoping review and consultations with ‘family carer collaborators’ and research allies. The scoping review identified and mapped academic and grey literature related to mental health carers, supporters, family and kin. Focus groups and interviews explored the themes identified during the scoping review. During consultations, family carer collaborators were invited to share their insights on carers participating in or leading research, as well as their perspectives on the state and nature of family carer research.

The findings gathered from the consultations and scoping review were synthesised using thematic analysis and summarised in a final report. The report also outlined a series of strategies to build family and carer research that is inclusive, useful and expansive.
