About this project
In collaboration with our partners the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne, we are exploring the 'Open Dialogue' approach to mental health treatment, care and support. This research project focuses on identifying opportunities and barriers to implementing an Open Dialogue approach into an Area Mental Health Service.
Some of the common elements of Open Dialogue approaches to care include:
- Bringing together mental health practitioners, families, carers, supporters and kin for joint discussions
- Embracing uncertainty by encouraging open discussion
- Emphasising listening and understanding the needs of the whole person
This person- and network-centred approach to mental health care can also support alternatives to compulsory treatment, seclusion and restraint.
