Jacqui Cousins

About me

I am a Community Mental Health Nurse & Counsellor with 25+ years experience working in healthcare, education and private practice.

I established my private practice Nursing The Mind so I can deliver healthcare according to my values, and utilise all aspects of my qualifications and experience. Most importantly, I focus on a culture of care which I believe is key to improving the health of our community.

I believe in utilising social prescribing, psychoeducation and nature-based therapies to promote self-directed recovery. This is to promote empowerment for people who are recovering from abuse that occurred in educational, medical, religious and workplace settings.

When not at work I immerse myself in nature, good stories and my community.

My experience

My clinical experience includes women’s health, youth, adult and refugee health, complex mental health and chronic illness, primary health care, and mental health counselling that is inclusive of people’s spiritual health needs.

My current role/work

I now specialise in counselling for people who are recovering from institutional harm including medical and spiritual abuse.

My podcast What The Church?! is aimed at improving health and spiritual care for people recovering from spiritual abuse.

My training

I hold a Master of Public Health, Graduate Diplomas in Counselling and Nursing Practice (Mental Health) and a Bachelor of Nursing. My clinical and group supervision training was with The Bouverie Centre and I have a certifications in Religious Trauma and Therapeutic Horticulture.

I also facilitate a Voices Vic Carer Support Group. I highly recommend their 4 day training.

My approach to supervision

My approach to clinical supervision is ‘care for the carer’ and supporting practitioners to develop their clinical practice, and safeguard their heath. My focus is informed by the excellent support I have received in clinical supervision over the years.
