About me

I've been a nomad most of my life and have had the good fortune of making an amazing career out of being given a mental health diagnosis. I have just moved back to Australia to help support my mum after working abroad for many years which has seen me enagaged in the lived experience sector in 10 countries for almost 30 years. Yep .. that means I'm seasoned :) I've also worked in the disability sector, in government funding roles and audited mental health services. I'm part of the LGBTQI+ world but know that is not all of who I am. I think I bring a sense of authenticity and humour, when it works, to all that I do and my signature strengths are networking, making sense of things and keeping it simple.

My experience

I've been working in the LE sector for almost 30 years. I've worked as a peer worker in many different settings and been a consumer consultant, as well as a mental health service auditor against the old Disability Sector Standards. I've worked in a range of countries and learnt a lot from those experiences. Some of the work has included working in clinical settings, non government, rural/remote areas, as well as metropolitan and also with First Nations communities in different countries. I've been developing and implementing peer delivered services and facilitating peer worker training in a number of countries for the last 15 years, and supervising peer workers and training and supervising peer supervisors for over 10 years. Although I've worked overseas for many years, I've also been keeping my hand in Australia by doing work here as well. I think my experience is well rounded and provides different experiences to engage in great conversations.

My current role/work

I've just returned to Australia and am doing a range of freelance consulting jobs within the LE sector currently both within Australia, Canada and the US. You can check me out, just google my name, check out my podcast Mastery Vibes: Peer Support Unleashed, or check out Exploration Mastery (ongoing professional development for peer workers).

My training

I've attended peer worker training in New Zealand and the US. I've also been developing and delivering peer worker certification training in the US and Canada for 15 years. I also have a Bachelor of Educational Studies and a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health - I don't think those degrees are as relevant for peer support but I know some people like to know about them.

My approach to supervision

The values I bring to supervision are the peer support values. I believe that peer support is about being an Exploration Facilitator - supporting an environment that sees people explore for themselves and I bring that to supervision too. My aim is to support you to be the most amazing authentic value-based peer supporter you can be. I will also work with you to explore your communication style and work within that. I remember when my supervisor did not modify their communication style to mine and it was disastrous! Yes I'll work from a trauma informed lens and strength based but I may also respectfully challenge you, just as you can respectfully challenge me. It's a partnership and exploration. If you want to work with someone who has experience outside of the norm - come explore with me.
