Affective disorders, also known as mood disorders, are common presentations in child and youth mental health services. This seminar will provide an overview of severe affective disorders with a focus on bipolar disorder in young people. Areas covered will include: diagnosis of severe affective disorders, including differentiating bipolar disorder from unipolar depression and borderline personality disorder; recognition of mixed episodes; understanding the reasons behind delays in diagnosis; awareness of the impact of bipolar disorder on functioning; psychosocial processes underlying and maintaining bipolar disorder; and a brief overview of psychosocial interventions.
